What is the difference between Employers Liability Insurance and Public Liability Insurance?

Public Liability Insurance vs. Employers Liability Insurance

What is Public Liability Insurance?

Liability insurance is quite a complex subject. In general, though, public liability insurance covers a business for damages for accidental death of or bodily injury to or illness of any person. It also covers accidental loss of or physical damage to tangible property occurring within the territorial limits of the business.

A normal public liability policy excludes liability for injury to any person employed by the insured under a contract of service or apprenticeship during the course of such employment. It can include cover for accidental loss of or physical damage to tangible property belonging to a partner, director, or employee of the of business on business grounds. This policy could be extended to cover liability arising out of defective workmanship.

What is Employer’s Liability Insurance?

Employers liability, on the other hand, covers a business for damages for the death or bodily injury to or illness of any person employed under a contract of service or apprenticeship with the insured. It is common practice for a business to take out both a public liability policy and an employers liability policy.
